First let me say I am so very sorry for your loss. I cannot imagine life without my best friend, but she and I are both aware it could happen, especially as she lost a kidney to cancer four years ago. And I believe wholeheartedly that you are right in thinking your dear friend gave you encouragement with that sticker, having myself received signs from my passed loved ones. Secondly, at my age you begin to wonder if you've actually made a significant difference in anyone's life, so hearing that my blog has had such a positive effect on you fills my heart with gladness. Thirdly, I am thrilled that you conquered your self-doubt about quilting and bravely dove in head-first, not only to work through your grief and make something meaningful and beautiful, but to make something that gave others comfort in their grief, as well. I am now utterly inspired by YOU, so I can't thank you enough for commenting and sharing your story here for me and any readers. Thank you, thank you, thank you, and blessings to you and Joey's family. I hope you continue this creative journey that is quilting. It has been a great joy in my life, and I hope it will continue to be so in yours.Linda Wulf Koenighttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05923385161588309971noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7101100114126500336.post-34607892395698474352021-04-30T13:49:10.615-07:002021-04-30T13:49:10.615-07:00I wanted to tell you that reading your posts and s...I wanted to tell you that reading your posts and seeing the photos of your work has had a profound effect on me. I had literally no skills regarding quilting. I had made only 2 simple patchwork quilts in the past, both of which were extremely flawed. I have issues with measurements and accuracy in cutting, lol. Anyway, my dear friend past away after fighting so hard to beat breast cancer. I was actually with her when she passed. It was devastating. A couple of weeks later, I was at her house, helping her only daughter clear things out so she could prepare to sell it. She asked me if I wanted any of her mothers things and I said, yes I want her clothes to make a quilt for her little grand daughter. Soon, I was pretty overwhelmed. I had all these clothes and I struggled with what to do. I was telling my neighbor that I did not think I had the know how to create something beautiful. Then I felt something tickle my arm and looked down. The visitor pass that the hospital had issued to me the day she died was stuck to my arm. Keep in mind, I had not seen nor thought of that sticker at all, My friend had been dead for months. How it suddenly became stuck to my arm is really a mystery. At that moment I knew it was my friend telling me I could do this. I made a tribute quilt, so colorful, whimsical and personal and I gave it to her daughter on the one year anniversary of her moms death. I hung on her little girls bedroom wall with magnets. The scene is sweet, it shows Joey's house, her animals, her jobs, her loved ones and inside jokes we shared. At the top, Joey is depicted as angel and I installed twinkling fairy lights surrounding her wings that have a hidden battery pack that is easily accessed. It is not perfect, but it is amazing. I used the remaining fabric and made two patchwork quilts for her two other besties. This was by far, the most satisfying creative endeavor I have ever taken on. Apparently that's how it worked for me, too. I wonder why, though. It would sure be nice to know exactly what is making our eyes respond in that way. We'd save a lot of time choosing border fabric if we could arrive at some sort of precise color formula relative to the colors that are in the scene. I guess I should have known that tracing paper was available in a roll, not to mention a larger size than my little 8-1/2 x 11 tablet (which has mysteriously gone missing), but I never checked it out. One of the things I don't like about parchment paper is that when I want to tape it to something or tape something to it, nothing sticks, of course, since that's what parchment paper is all about!
